What is TAVI?

What are percutaneous Valve Implantation and TAVI procedures?

Percutaneous Valve implantation is a minimally invasive technique to replace a diseased valve without doing open-heart surgery. In the conventional valve replacement, the front chest bone (sternum) is cut open and the heart is exposed to replace the Valve. On the other hand, in the percutaneous valve implantation, a small catheter is sent by a small incision on the thigh. This catheter then implants the new valve. This is a breakthrough surgery that has a faster recovery and no trauma to the body.

TAVI in Delhi

In this Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation, or TAVI, the diseased aortic valve is not removed and the new replacement valve is applied to the old valve. You will be taken to the cath lab and will be given painkillers and medicines to make you drowsy. You will not feel any kind of pain during the procedure.

After giving local anesthesia, a wire or small pipe-like structure known as a catheter is introduced via thigh or arm. This wire is then guided towards the aortic valve where a new replacement valve is placed over the old valve.

Benefits of TAVI

  • A valve replacement surgery is performed without using any major incisions, just a small incision in your thigh or arm is enough to replace a valve in your heart.
  • The heart doesn’t need to be stopped as it is required in open surgery.
  • Patient recovery is much faster than the open surgical procedure.
  • Those patients who are not suitable for open valve replacement surgery can get benefitted from TAVI such as aged patients over 70 years of age.
  • Patients suffering from diabetes, calcified aortic stenosis, coronary artery disease, renal diseases, and those with a previous open-heart surgery can also get benefitted from this procedure.
  • Those patients who want a replacement of their previous artificial valve can also go through this procedure without going through open-heart surgery.

Which Valve Implantations are possible this way that is without any major incisions?

  • Aortic Valve Implantation
  • Pulmonary Valve Implantation
  • Mitral Valve Implantation

What are the types of valves that can be chosen from?

There are two types of valves that can be implanted for valve implantation procedures –

  • Tissue Valve – this valve is made up of animal tissue that serves as a normal valve for up to 10 to 20 years.
  • Mechanical Valve – It is an artificially made valve that also serves a normal valve-like function. They last for about the lifetime of the patient. However these mechanical valves are only placed surgically and require life long anticoagulation.
  • Both types of valves can be replaced if required.

When can I go home after TAVI?

You can go home after 2 to 3 days post-procedure depending upon your overall health condition. You will be up and about after a week to perform your daily activities.

Are there any risks or complications associated with TAVI and other percutaneous valve Implantation Procedures?

Although the risks associated with these minimally invasive methods are lower than the open-heart surgery, there are still some risks that one should be aware of.

  • Valve Leak – If the valve is not wide enough to cover the old valve then there can be some blood leak through the valve, which can be managed under the expertise of Dr Rajiv Agarwal. It is one of the rarest chances.
  • The risk of stroke is always there in all types of heart catheterization procedures as well as in all types of heart surgeries.
  • Other rare complications are kidney issues due to the dye and vessel damage, both of them are reversible and can be managed if happen.
